Martin Luther, Biography, Bible work and contribution Protestant Reformation
Martin Luther 1483-1546 was theologian, Philosopher and reformist in Protestant reformation, He became monk to understand religion but he rejected some teachings’ of Catholic Church. He disputed the view on indulgences. He gave 95 theses and questioned authority of Church. Luther said salvation would not be earned by good deeds but would be received only as the free gift of God. In this way he actually challenges the authority of Pops. Martin’s father was working in copper mines. He got his initial education in Magdeburg in 1497 mainly focused on logic, grammar and rhetoric. His father wanted to see him as lawyer but he was influenced by Bartholomaeus and Arnoldi drawn to theology and Philosophy.
In 1516 Johann Tetzel was send to Germany to build a Roman Catholic Church to sell indulgence to collect money in order to build St.peter,s Basilica in Rom. On October 1517 He wrote 95 theses and placed on the door of Church. He invited church to give argument and answer his questions he raised in his 95 thesis. He translated New Testament of the Bible and 5000 prints of it spread out in all over Europe and new Printing press played very important role in spreading knowledge as Luther says print was gift of God. In 1518 Luther 95 theses were translated from Latin into German. Within few days it spread out in Germany. New religious argument and opinion was developed against established interpretation and institutions. Religious scholars and Church was annoyed from this development. In 1520 Luther new work was published, To the Christian Nobility of the German Nation, On the Babylonian Captivity of the Church and On the freedom of a Christian. In 1521 emperor banned his literature and announced him as notorious heretic and warn all to in the Germany to give Luther shelter and food. He came in Wittenberg where he started to write about New Testament. Here peasants started to protest against King and Luther fully supported them although they were betrayed by Swabian League but many religious movements flourished after that. to the John Calvin Luther said that it was false doctrine to believe that Christian’s
soul sleeps after it is separated from the body in death. He also rejected the existence
of purgatory. He consistently rejected the idea of a as though
our people were an army of Christians against the Turks, who were enemies of
Christ. This is absolutely contrary to Christ's doctrine and name. On the other
hand, in keeping with his Luther did support non-religious war
against the Turks. Throughout his lifetime he was not in fever of Jews
as he considered Jews as liars and blasphemers. His writing on Jews On the
Jews and their lies and On the Holy Name and the Lineage of Christ
published in 1543. 1531 onwards his health deteriorated day by day he was died
in 1546. Luther is honored by Christians in various ways by Christian traditions
directly from Protestant Reformation and Lutheranism.
